REACH – Hawks and Pre-registration.
You will be aware of REACH and its implications for EU chemical manufacturers and importers who will be required to commence pre-registration of products seeking compliance from the summer of this year.  You will find a link here to ReFac, the REACH facilitation company set up by a large group of UK small to medium sized chemical companies to help resident EU companies gain compliance for their products and to assist non EU manufacturers in acting as a sole representative for REACH.
We will be contacting our suppliers on the subject of appointing a sole EU representative shortly and keeping our customers informed on Hawks REACH progress.
If you require assistance with future REACH compliance or just have a question then visit www.refac.eu or go to the link on the links page of this site.

Staff Opportunity at Hawks

We are looking to employ a Sales Manager based in Manchester to manage and develop sales initially of Hawks Chemicals product range of halogenated intermediates and bromine compounds but also to increasingly engage in the activities of Hawks Scientific, a new sister company, a web based laboratory chemical supplier.

We are planning to split the activities of the two companies in time but presently are running both in tandem.  As a major percentage of our sales are continental a second language, French or German would be an advantage and you would be joining a very capable team.  We are looking for some chemical sales experience and the preferred age range  would around 30 years.

If you feel that this challenge might interest you then please write to the Managing Director Dan Kaye with your CV or telephone him for more details.

Hawks Chemicals are pleased to announce an extension to their range of phase transfer catalysts:- the Glymes.

Chemistry:

Glymes belong to the most powerful solvents available today. They have high thermal and chemical stability in a broad pH range and, thus, are used in many high temperature reactions. With their all-ether structure they are very similar to crown ethers and are used in many phase transfer catalyzed (PTC) reactions and several extractions as cost effective replacement for crown-ethers. Please download our PTC- brochure which contains many examples for polyglymes as phasetransfer catalysts.

Unlike other organic solvents, polyglycol dimethyl ethers dissolve many inorganic salts. This is due to the fact that the glyme forms a complex with the cation. Glymes are "LINEAR CROWN ETHERS"

Hence, reactions involving salts can be enhanced in glymes solvents because anions are more reactive (less solvated). Typical examples are sodium borohydride (NaBH4) reductions, anionic polymerizations, nucleophilic substitutions, alkylations and deprotonations involving strong bases and many more. Sodium fluoride (NaF) in glymes solvents is used as fluorine source for the production of fluoro polymers like polytetrafluoro ethylene (Teflon).

The complexing ability of Polyglycol DME types is used in many industrial applications like electroplating and electrodeposition of copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni). Butyl glymes have high solvency for gold salts (AuCl3).

The high thermal stability of glymes makes them useful additives of solder pastes and soldering fluxes or for high temperature depolymerisation reactions.

Glymes mix with water and with hydrocarbons, alcohols, aromatics etc. in any ratio, i.e. basically with all organic solvents.

Butyl Glymes do not mix with water but mix with most organic solvents. This makes them excellent and safe replacements for solvents like THF, diethyl ether, dibutyl ether and dioxane in Grignard reactions and organo metallic reactions in general. See section about butyl diglyme for more informations.

Glycol dimethyl ethers are very stong solvents. They even can dissolve or swell several types of plastics and polymers and they can be used as plasticisers. This is used to modify for example the properties of fibre glass and plastic fibres.

These outstanding solvent properties combined with an excellent toxicological profile make Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether an alternative to many standard solvents especially in the field of coatings and paints applications. For example, Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether is used as replacement for NMP (N-methyl pyrrolidone) in many applications. The chemical and physiacl properties of NMP and Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether are very similar.

There is a common prejudice that glymes can hardly be removed from reaction mixtures. Glymes are as easy to remove as other solvents. Glymes with low molecular weights (Monoglyme, Diglyme, Triglyme and Tetraglyme) can be removed by a simple distillation. In fact, due to the high stability of glymes, the recovery rates are much higher than for other organic solvents. Polyglymes which can not be distilled can be removed by standard separation processes like washing with water, salting out, solvent extraction and many more. Please feel free to e-mail your questions and let us solve your problem!"
