Hawks Chemical Meet Bert Trautmann
Hawks Chemical held their Christmas party at the Citizens Suite at Manchester City Football Club last weekend where we saw the Blues beat Norwich City 5-1. After the match we bumped into Bert Trautmann, a very famous goalkeeper from the 1950's renowned for breaking his neck in an FA Cup final. Bert is now retired and living in Spain and Germany where is on the board of the DFB, the Deutsche Fussball Bund, their equivalent to the English FA. Reg, Tim and Mark enjoyed his company and thanks for the time given for the joint photo.

REACH – Hawks and Pre-registration.
You will be aware of REACH and its implications for EU chemical manufacturers and importers who will be required to commence pre-registration of products seeking compliance from the summer of this year. You will find a link here to ReFac, the REACH facilitation company set up by a large group of UK small to medium sized chemical companies to help resident EU companies gain compliance for their products and to assist non EU manufacturers in acting as a sole representative for REACH.
We will be contacting our suppliers on the subject of appointing a sole EU representative shortly and keeping our customers informed on Hawks REACH progress.
If you require assistance with future REACH compliance or just have a question then visit www.refac.eu or go to the link on the links page of this site.
The complexing ability of Polyglycol DME types is used in many industrial applications like electroplating and electrodeposition of copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni). Butyl glymes have high solvency for gold salts (AuCl3).
The high thermal stability of glymes makes them useful additives of solder pastes and soldering fluxes or for high temperature depolymerisation reactions.
Glymes mix with water and with hydrocarbons, alcohols, aromatics etc. in any ratio, i.e. basically with all organic solvents.
Butyl Glymes do not mix with water but mix with most organic solvents. This makes them excellent and safe replacements for solvents like THF, diethyl ether, dibutyl ether and dioxane in Grignard reactions and organo metallic reactions in general. See section about butyl diglyme for more informations.
Glycol dimethyl ethers are very stong solvents. They even can dissolve or swell several types of plastics and polymers and they can be used as plasticisers. This is used to modify for example the properties of fibre glass and plastic fibres.
These outstanding solvent properties combined with an excellent toxicological profile make Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether an alternative to many standard solvents especially in the field of coatings and paints applications. For example, Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether is used as replacement for NMP (N-methyl pyrrolidone) in many applications. The chemical and physiacl properties of NMP and Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether are very similar.
There is a common prejudice that glymes can hardly be removed from reaction mixtures. Glymes are as easy to remove as other solvents. Glymes with low molecular weights (Monoglyme, Diglyme, Triglyme and Tetraglyme) can be removed by a simple distillation. In fact, due to the high stability of glymes, the recovery rates are much higher than for other organic solvents. Polyglymes which can not be distilled can be removed by standard separation processes like washing with water, salting out, solvent extraction and many more. Please feel free to e-mail your questions and let us solve your problem!"

Hawks displayed their new package for bottled bromine at Chemspec, Lyon in early June and received a number of new enquiries from the major markets on the continent. Other products featured were phase transfer catalysts, anhydrous lithium salts and a number of pharmaceutical intermediates.
We thank all our visitors for coming to our stand and for their enquiries. We value your business.
Major products featured will be phase transfer catalysts, anhydrous lithium salts, pharmaceutical intermediates and Bottled Bromine. More details on the new innovative package for Bottled Bromine follow.
Hawks are interested in expanding this business and welcome enquiries from either companies interested in outsourcing their decanting business, or companies where development products require specialist bottling. The bottling plant represents an ideal opportunity for companies to off-load their difficult and dangerous bottling requirements. Please email us with your enquiry

Bromine bottling from Dead Sea Bromine (DSB) bulk will be done in the UK, and Hawks have agreed distribution on behalf of DSB for both UK & Continental markets. The new 'returnable' pack is fully approved by both industry and transport authorities and sets a new standard for small lot bromine service.
